Ottawa's Free Deck Builder Matching Service

We help Ottawa homeowners find local deck builders, understand what a deck should cost here, and know what Ottawa's permit rules and Ontario's Building Code actually require before they sign anything.

About Deck Builders Ottawa

A deck looks like a simple job until the rules come in. The City of Ottawa requires a permit, whatever the deck's area, when a deck attached to or next to the house has a walking surface more than 600 mm above the ground, and for any elevated deck that is the main way into the house. The 2024 Ontario Building Code then sets the guards, the stairs and the footings, and on some points Ontario is stricter than the national code: every required guard in Ontario must have nothing climbable between 140 mm and 900 mm above the deck, and footings on Leda clay must be engineered. For applications deemed complete on or after March 11, 2026, Ottawa also applies two zoning by-laws at once, 2008-250 and 2026-50, with the most restrictive provisions applying.

None of that is explained on a quote, so we explain it here, with every rule traced to the City page or the Code section it comes from. We found no Ontario or City of Ottawa licence for deck builders, so what protects you is the permit, the inspections and a clear written contract.

Deck Builders Ottawa is a matching service, not a deck company. We do not build decks and we do not employ tradespeople. You tell us about your deck, and we send your request to local deck builders listed in the Ottawa Construction Network directory. They reply to you by email. We do not screen or verify them, and we say so, which is why every page tells you what to check yourself.

How It Works

1

Tell Us About Your Deck

Choose the job type and add what you know: the rough size, how high it sits above the ground, whether it attaches to the house, the material you have in mind, stairs and railings, and whether an old deck comes out first. No phone number needed.

2

Local Contractors Reply by Email

We send your request to local deck builders in the Ottawa Construction Network directory. They contact you by email to arrange a site visit and a written quote.

3

Compare Before You Sign

Compare quotes line by line: the foundation, the boards, the guards and stairs, removal of any old deck, and who applies for the permit and books the inspections. Get all of it in writing.

Why Use Our Service

Decks Only

This site covers one trade. Your request goes to deck builders, not general contractors or other trades, for new decks, composite and PVC decks, replacement and repair, railings, stairs, footings and permit drawings.

Published Prices, Labelled

Every service page gives the published range where enough vendors publish one, labelled as vendor estimates and dated. Where too few Ottawa prices are published, such as railings, stairs and deck removal, we say so instead of inventing one.

Your Rights in Ontario

We explain the protections that matter when you hire here: the City permit and its three inspections, the 10-day cancellation right on an agreement signed at home, the 10 per cent limit on going over an estimate, and the holdback the Construction Act generally requires (get advice for your situation).

Deck IQ

Our free knowledge base answers Ottawa deck questions: what a deck should cost, when you need a permit, how high a guard must be, how deep footings go, and how to read a deck quote.

Deck Services We Cover

The jobs we match, with the published range where one exists:

New Deck Building

A new pressure-treated or cedar deck for an Ottawa home, from footings and framing to boards, guards and stairs, built to the 2024 Ontario Building Code.

Vendor estimates read in September 2026 from Ottawa and Ontario builder pages; the spread is wide. Some packages exclude railings and steps. The City permit fee is separate.

Composite & PVC Decks

Decks surfaced with composite or cellular PVC boards. Ottawa asks for a CCMC or BMEC material report when the decking is not conventional lumber.

Vendor estimates read in September 2026 from Ottawa and Ontario builder pages; the spread is wide. Warranty terms are manufacturer terms, not lifespans.

Deck Replacement & Removal

Tearing out a worn deck and building its replacement, including taking the old lumber to Trail Road or another landfill.

Too few published Ottawa removal prices to quote a range. Price the new deck by material (see New Deck Building and Composite & PVC Decks).

Deck Repair & Resurfacing

New boards on sound framing, loose guards and stairs fixed, and a fresh penetrating finish on a wood deck.

Too few published Ottawa repair and resurfacing prices to quote a range. Ask for the board count, the finish product and the prep in writing.

Deck Railings & Guards

Wood, aluminum and glass guards to Ontario rules: 900 mm or 1 070 mm high, openings under 100 mm, nothing climbable between 140 mm and 900 mm.

Too few published Ottawa railing prices to quote a range. Get the guard height, the infill spacing and the attachment detail in the quote.

Deck Stairs

Deck stairs and landings to Ontario limits: rise 125 mm to 200 mm, run 255 mm to 355 mm, and a handrail once there are more than 3 risers.

Too few published Ottawa stair prices to quote a range. Ask for the number of risers, the landing and the handrail in the quote.

Deck Footings & Helical Piles

Concrete footings or helical piles under a deck, including the engineered design Ontario requires on Leda clay and for deep foundations.

Too few published Ottawa footing and pile prices to quote a range. Ask what foundation each quote uses and whether engineering is included.

Deck Design & Permit Drawings

Scaled site, framing and elevation drawings for an Ottawa deck permit, drawn by a designer or by you under the homeowner design exemption.

Vendor estimates read in September 2026 from three drafting and design firms. One drafting firm lists engineering separately. The City permit fee is separate.
